How to get my business on ChatGPT when there is no form

Owners keep looking for how to get my business on ChatGPT the way they claimed a Google Business Profile: a form, a claim link, a fee. That object does not exist for organic recommendations. OpenAI does not sell a business listing that inserts you into ChatGPT's answers, and nobody outside OpenAI can sell you one either.
There is a separate product path — merchant product feeds and partner "Get Quote" integrations for approved platforms — that is not a local-service listing form for an independent contractor, salon, or clinic. If someone pitches a "ChatGPT business listing," they are selling a product that does not match what buyers mean when they ask ChatGPT for a plumber or a dentist.
OpenAI's partner Get Quote specification is for approved platforms that supply a business feed, not for an individual shop filing its own profile.
How ChatGPT finds a local business
When a question needs current information, ChatGPT can search the web. OpenAI's help documentation (retrieved 2026-09-26) describes the search step in plain terms: ChatGPT often rewrites the user's prompt into one or more targeted queries, may send follow-up queries after reading the first results, and may share an approximate location — derived from IP or optional device location — with trusted third-party providers so nearby listings can be returned. OpenAI does not name those local providers in that help article, and it states that placement in search results is not guaranteed.
That rewrite step is why two owners asking similar questions can see different shortlists. The model is not looking up a static "ChatGPT Yellow Pages" entry for your city. It is composing search queries, reading what comes back, and writing an answer that may or may not include you.
A reported Yelp partnership (announced by Yelp in August 2026, covering reviews, ratings, photos, business details, and some reservation features) is the one local data relationship both sides have acknowledged in public. Claims that ChatGPT's local answers are powered by Foursquare, Bing's index, or Google Business Profile as a direct feed are not documented by OpenAI. A 2,879-query 2026 study by A Social Solutions measured Foursquare-controlled domains at 0.00% of citations on its primary surface — useful as a myth check, not as a ranking recipe.
Training data vs. live search: why live search matters for local
Training data is a frozen snapshot. Hours, phone numbers, service areas, and "who is open tonight" change constantly. For local recommendations, the live search step is what can read today's website, today's directory page, and today's review profile. Blocking the search crawler, or leaving stale facts online, is how a business becomes invisible or misdescribed even when the brand is well known offline. Live search is also why "we updated the site last year" is not the same as "the answer engines can read the current page today."
What ChatGPT actually cites (2026 data)
Citation studies disagree on percentages because they ask different questions, in different verticals, with different scrapers. They agree on the shape: ChatGPT leans on directories and review aggregators as inputs, then names businesses as outputs.
| Study | Sample (2026) | Headline finding |
|---|---|---|
| BrightLocal AI directory sources | 60,970 checks across AI Overviews, AI Mode, and ChatGPT | Yelp appeared as a source in 80% of ChatGPT's local answers in that dataset |
| AskedAbout | 511 ChatGPT answers / 173 audits | Directory domains were 25.4% of cited sources and appeared in 73.6% of answers, but directories were the recommended business only 0.27% of the time |
| Complete SEO | 44,988 home-services answers (35 trades, 24 metros) | Leading attached domains included angi.com (16.5% of answers), expertise.com (12.8%), bbb.org (12.3%), and reddit.com (11.3%) |
| Steady Demand Citation Ledger | 1,500 queries × ChatGPT re-run vs Gemini (50 metros; updated 2026-09-09) | ChatGPT cited general directories 46.0% of the time and businesses' own sites 10.5%; Gemini cited own sites 49.6% and directories 17.7% |
Directories are the input; businesses are the output.
Why any source list needs a date
Source mix is not stable. Steady Demand's 2026-08-20 ChatGPT re-run found reddit.com had fallen from 41.7% of citations to zero (0 of 334 on a same-day follow-up). OtterlyAI, measuring 16 national-brand reports in mid-August 2026, found ChatGPT's Reddit citations fell by at least 73% while ChatGPT's overall citation volume rose. Complete SEO, scraping home-service prompts from 2026-09-03 to 2026-09-07, still found reddit.com attached to 11.3% of answers. Those numbers can all be true in their windows. "Post on Reddit" is not a strategy, and "Reddit is dead for ChatGPT" is not a settled fact either. Date every citation claim you act on.
Spearleaf's August 2026 study of 216 US markets adds another reason for dates: only 48.2% of businesses ChatGPT showed on a first ask still appeared when the identical question was asked 4–9 days later (469 of 974). A screenshot is not a ranking.
The five things you control
Nobody controls what ChatGPT will say on the next ask. You do control the evidence it is likely to find.
Let OAI-SearchBot crawl
OpenAI separates crawlers. OAI-SearchBot is for ChatGPT search; GPTBot is for training. They are independent controls. OpenAI's crawler documentation states that robots.txt changes for search take roughly 24 hours to apply, and that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (they may still appear as navigational links). Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want your pages eligible for search citations. Blocking GPTBot does not substitute for allowing the search bot.
Make your website quotable
Put one plain sentence — what you do, where, for whom — on the home page, about page, and each service page, in ordinary HTML that loads without a special login. "Family-owned HVAC serving greater Lansing, same-day furnace repair" is quotable. "Comfort, delivered" is not. LocalBusiness (or Organization) schema should match the visible text, not invent facts the page does not show. ChatGPT and other engines cite pages they can read; a slogan alone gives them nothing to lift.
If a page cannot answer what you do, where you work, and who you serve, rewrite that page before you buy another directory package.
For the wider citation layer beyond ChatGPT, see local citations for AI search.
Keep identical facts on the platforms engines cite
Name, address, phone, hours, website, and service categories should match across Yelp, BBB, Bing Places, Apple Business (Apple's place-card system that replaced Apple Business Connect on 2026-04-14), and the vertical directories your trade actually shows up in. BrightLocal's 2026 citation work and Spearleaf's per-vertical lists both show that the important directory depends on the category — auto repair is not the same reading list as a med spa. Claim the profiles that appear in answers for your trade, then make the facts agree. A clean listing with the wrong phone number is still a wrong answer waiting to be quoted.
Google Business Profile still matters for the verification step buyers take after an AI shortlist. See the Google Business Profile checklist for AI search.
Earn real reviews where ChatGPT reads them
Reviews are evidence. Fake reviews, reviews bought for a required star rating, and AI-generated fake reviews are illegal under the FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule (effective 2024-10-21); knowing violations can bring civil penalties. Platform rules diverge on solicitation: Google Business Profile help documents sharing a review request link or QR code; Yelp's content guidelines and business guidance prohibit asking customers to write reviews. Do not solicit Yelp reviews. Do the work that earns honest reviews on Google and on any other platform whose policy allows a request — and keep profiles accurate even where you may not ask.
Remove stale facts
Closed locations, old phone numbers, retired services, and outdated price pages get repeated as current when a search crawler or a directory mirror still carries them. Audit your site and your claimed listings the way you would audit a printed brochure: if it is wrong in public, assume an answer engine can quote it.
Getting named is half the job: surviving the check
In BrightLocal's 2026 consumer search-behavior research (n=1,227 US consumers who used AI for local search), only 18% of AI users felt ready to contact an AI-recommended business without further checking. Of consumers who started on an AI tool in their most recent local search, 2% used it as the only channel, 43% went on to check Google, and 39% looked at social media. Separately, BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 (1,002 US adults) found that 31% of consumers will only use a business rated 4.5 stars or higher, up from 17% the prior year, and that 97% read reviews for local businesses.
So the Google profile, recent reviews, and website facts still decide the call. Being named in ChatGPT is a shortlist event. Surviving the check is the sale. If the AI answer spells your name right but your hours, phone, or recent reviews fail the next tab the buyer opens, the recommendation did not convert.
How to check whether ChatGPT names you (without fooling yourself)

Your logged-in ChatGPT account is personalized. Memory, prior chats, and location settings can shape what you see. Treat a single answer from your own account as an anecdote.
Complete SEO's three-day home-services study in 2026 found that two runs of the same prompt minutes apart returned the identical set of named businesses only 3.6% of the time. Steady Demand's Gemini-vs-ChatGPT comparison on 1,500 identical queries (updated 2026-09-09) found the two engines' cited domains overlapped 8.3% of the time and named the same top business 4.9% of the time. Asking Gemini the same question twice, cited sources matched about 41% of the time. Different engines, and even the same engine twice, are not a single ranking.
A 30-minute DIY protocol:
- Write ten buyer questions a real customer would ask (category + city, never your brand name). Example: "best HVAC repair in Lansing who does same-day service."
- Open a private/incognito window (or a fresh account with memory off). Do not stay logged into your usual ChatGPT profile.
- Ask each question three times, waiting a few minutes between runs. Log the business names and every cited URL.
- Score yourself as a rate: how often you appear across the 30 answers (10 questions × 3), not as a single screenshot.
- Repeat the set monthly. Compare rates, not one lucky or unlucky day.
- Separately, watch referrals: ChatGPT search links can carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, and GA4's Default Channel Group includes an AI Assistant channel for ChatGPT and similar assistants (it excludes Google AI Overviews and AI Mode). Details in the GA4/Search Console measurement guide.
One check is an anecdote. A rate needs repeated samples.
What not to buy
Do not buy guaranteed ChatGPT placement, fake or incentivized reviews, mass directory blasts that publish wrong NAP data, or "AI listing" submission services that imply OpenAI runs a claimable business directory for organic answers. Those products either invent a control you do not have or create evidence that hurts you when a buyer — or an engine — checks.
Also skip advice that treats one viral Reddit thread, one paid roundup link, or one screenshot of a favorable answer as a durable ranking. The 2026 citation studies above disagree on which domain leads in a given week; they agree that the shortlist moves. Spend the budget on crawl access, matching facts, honest reviews, and a measurement habit instead.
